Nondestructive Evaluation image

High Throughput Characterization

Non-destructive Evaluation is a crucial piece of the puzzle for calibrating predictive models and qualifying additively manufactured parts. The ability to asses the internal structures of a part, while keeping the part pristine for future use saves time, material costs, and reduces uncertainty. At MRL, we are involved in both in-situ and ex-situ NDE. We are developing novel integration of sensors within commercial AM machines for in-situ process monitoring, which provides key information without interrupting the standard process to build the part. For traditional ex-situ NDE, we have recently acquired a YXLON FF35 x-ray computed tomography (microCT with the following specifications:

  • Material capabilities: Nickel Alloys, Aluminum Alloys, Titanium Alloys, Plastic, Multi-Material
  • Maximum sample size/chamber volume: 30 cm diameter, 50 cm tall
  • Maximum Table Load: 30kg
  • Down to 10 um voxel size (resolution)
  • Analysis of results using data analytics and machine learning
